Music Therapy

What Is Music Therapy?

Music therapy in either group or one-on-one sessions involves the use of music to accomplish non-music goals in the following areas: cognitive, emotional, communication, social, physical, behavioral, and sensorimotor. It is the use of musical interventions by a Board-Certified Music Therapist who creates a trusting client- therapist relationship and develops individualized goals based on the client’s abilities and needs.

While traditional music classes and lessons use music to learn an instrument or musical skills, music therapy uses music to achieve non-musical goals. Music therapy can come in many forms: adapted private instrument lessons, specialized small group music classes, and individualized music therapy sessions.

Small Group Music Classes: A group music class taught by a Board-Certified Music Therapist who leads the students through musical activities to strengthen their social, emotional, motor, and communication skills.

Private Music Therapy Sessions: A one-on-one musical session led by a Certified Music Therapist that addresses the individual goals of the student.
